Weather
Mauritius is hot and humid for most of the year. The summers are hot, wet, and humid and last from December to April. The average temperature is 23°C. The warm, dry winter is from May to November. Anti-cyclones affect the island from May to September, whereas Cyclones usually appear during November-April.
Language
The lingua franca is Creole. However, in Mauritius, people switch languages according to the situation. English is generally accepted as the official language of the island and French and English, which have long enjoyed greater social status, are favoured in educational and professional settings. Also, most newspapers and media communications are in French.
Tourist Attractions
- Relax under a palm tree at one of the endless white paradise-beaches of the island
- Experience the smells, noises and bustle of the mercantile capital Port Louis, Africa’s wealthiest city, that are never far away. Extra charm is added to the city by the French style buildings found around the main square and by the picturesque harbor situated between mountains.
- Also visit the busy garment markets in the Central Plateau towns of Quatre Bornes and Curepipe
- The Botanical Pamplemonsses Gardens were built in 1767 by Pierre Poivre. The indigenous species of plants exhibited in this garden date back several decades.
- Black River Gorges National Park is a national park that was constructed in order to conserve the natural vegetation of the island. Black River Peak is the highest point of the island.
- The beach and lagoon of Ile Anx Cerfs attract crowds for sunbathing and water sports, souvenir shops and restaurants.
