Intro

Sense of adventure? Taste of life? South Africa delivers – on a grand scale!

South Africa is a beautiful country with a rich array of cultures, fauna and flora. Every country in the world displays some diversity, but South Africa, stretching from the hippos in the Limpopo River to the penguins waddling on the Cape, takes some beating. The country’s breathtaking sights and rich historical background will engulf any visitor that crosses its borders. Good travel networks and a well developed tourism segment have enabled the South African tourism industry to grow at an enormous rate. Its scenery includes dramatic mountain ranges, beautiful beaches (2,798km coastline) and vast dry deserts, while its people comprise a kaleidoscope of cultures and heritages.

Weather

Famous for its sunshine, South Africa is in a subtropical location moderated by the ocean on three sides. The Western Cape gets most of its rainfall in winter, while the rest of the country receives most of its rainfall in summer. Generally, temperatures inland are regulated from becoming too warm as a result of the lands elevation above sea level.

Language

South Africa has 11 official languages: Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Xhosa, Zulu, Pedi, Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana and Venda.

In this regard it is third only to Bolivia and India in number. While all the languages are formally equal, some languages are spoken more than others and the three most spoken first home languages are Zulu (23.8%), Xhosa (17.6%) and Afrikaans (13.3%). Despite the fact that English is recognised as the language of commerce and science, it is spoken by only a small part of South Africans at home.

Tourist Attractions

  • Enjoy the unspoiled beaches of South Africa which stretch along the warm waters of the East Coast and the cooler waters of the West Coast. Also the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal offers wonderful beaches and many fine golf courses.

Antrim Villa

Guesthouse Cape Town, Western Cape
please ask for quote Built in the late 1800’s, this old English Victorian house was originally a family residence. High ceilings and well kept stuccos give this guesthouse charm and light. Situated in Three Anchor Bay, at the foot of Signal Hill, it is only a 10-minute walk from Cape Town’s new stadium and 10-minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. We purchased the house in 2008 from South African owners that had been running it as a guesthouse for 10 years. It has now been fully refurbished, inspired by a tropical-African style in a earthy colour palate, accentuated with natural fabrics such as sisal, linen and bamboo. The large, new saltwater pool lies enticingly in a secluded, tropical garden. Most of the rooms at Antrim Villa still have the original pine flooring. This is a friendly, airy house with a cosy fireplace in the lounge. Secure off street parking is provided.

The Barberspan bird sanctuary lies on the outskirts of the little known Delareyville, close to Vryburg on the N14 highway and roughly three hours’ drive from Johannesburg. Barberspan is the largest of a series of pans that lie in the fossil bed of the Harts River. The pan, which measures roughly 600 metres wide and 1 550 metres in length lies within the Barberspan Bird Sanctuary. More than 12 000 birds and over 365 bird species have been recorded here - the sheer numbers and diversity mean that the sanctuary is extremely popular with birders. Part of the reason for so many birds is that it is one of the few permanent bodies of water on the western highveld, and during the dry months, provides food and shelter for these large numbers of waterbirds. It is home to, amongst others, flamingos, pelicans, grebes, terns, herons, cranes, ibis and bitterns, and all but one of the South African duck species have been sighted at the pans. Power boats are not allowed in the pans and even canoes and rowing boats are restricted to the southern section, although birding from a canoe is particularly gratifying. However the Barberspan Bird Sanctuary is popular with anglers and several regional and national angling competitions are held here. One is allowed to camp along the angling shoreline and there are also walking trails. WHEN&WHERE? The Barberspan Bird Sanctuary is open daily from 06h00 to 18h00. Barberspan Bird Sanctuary is well sign-posted from the N14 which links the small towns of Delareyville and Sannieshof.
